Repair Exchange 2016 database dirty shutdown

An email server called Microsoft Exchange Server is used to store contacts, calendars, attachments, and other data in addition to email. It is one of the most important components of any business as it is used for data distribution and storage. Each mailbox or account is copied or backed up for Outlook. However, you also need to take care of Exchange and its EDB file as it is also prone to a variety of problems, including dirty shutdowns that require repairing the Exchange database.

Reason for Dirty Shutdown

There are many reasons for the dirty shutdown error:-

  • When log files get damaged
  • EDB files are not properly separated from log files
  • The server’s log files are missing
  • The server cannot read the log files

To fix this dirty shutdown error, we recommend below manual and automated method which helps to repair Exchange 2016 database.

1. Manual Method

If Exchange database is in a dirty shutdown state, you must fix it. Use the following steps to fix the dirty shutdown error.

1. Make a backup of your entire Exchange database files.

2. Run the eseutil command to check the continuity of the tool. Use the command below on the Exchange Management Shell:

eseutil /mh <path to database>

3. Now complete soft recovery on the database with this command:

eseutil /r enn /l <path to log files> /d <path to database file> /i

4. Now, check the consistency of the database. If it’s still in an inconsistent state, complete a hard recovery. Run this command:

eseutil /p <path to database file>

5. At this point it is time to defragment the database.

Eseutil /d <path to database file>

6. Lastly, check the integrity of the database with the below command

Isinteg -s <server name> -fix -test alltests

If you use the manual method, you have to accept three things:

1. Databases not being mounted cannot be guaranteed.

2. Since it discards any corrupted data, you must accept the data loss.

3. After using this, you cannot contact Microsoft Support.
